The title of the exhibition – this/here – denotes the playfulness present in the artists’ oeuvre. In Smith’s performances, the absurd and shiny costuming is transplanted into the everyday surrounds of the street, whilst in Fumikazu’s works, the solemnity of the heavy palette is disrupted by bright accents of yellows, reds, and pinks.
this/here could also be read as an exercise in 1 + 1 = 3: two divergent practices coming together to create a third entity. Discipline and form meet the kinesthetic and rumpled, in a snapshot of the multiplicity of contemporary practice.
